The first cases of West Nile virus infection have been confirmed in the north-eastern part of Slovenia. The National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ) has confirmed three cases in the Pomurska and Podravska regions, marking the first indigenous infections after five seasons without any detected cases.

How is West Nile virus transmitted?

Infected mosquitoes are the carriers of the virus. Most people do not get sick when they are bitten, but a small minority develop a short-lived febrile illness. Mosquitoes become infected by sucking the blood of infected birds, which are a natural reservoir of the virus. Other routes of transmission are rare and include blood transfusions, donated organs, mother-to-child transmission and via breast milk.

Symptoms and course of the disease

After infection, the first symptoms may appear within three to 14 days. Most people who are infected do not develop symptoms at all. But those who do get sick may experience flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches and tiredness. In rare cases, about one person in 150, a more severe form of the disease affecting the central nervous system may develop.

Preventive measures

To reduce the risk of infection, it is essential to take preventive measures:

Use repellents
Wear appropriate clothing such as long trousers and long sleeves.
Install screens on windows and doors to prevent mosquitoes from entering.
Remove standing water around the home as it is an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Which repellent to choose?

There is a flood of different mosquito and other insect repellents on the market today. Questions that consumers often ask are:

- How long does the repellent last?
- Is the repellent safe to use on the skin, especially on children and pregnant women?
- Does the repellent contain harmful chemicals or natural ingredients?
- How effective is the repellent against different types of insects?
